Chasing the weather

It’s gonna be a close one. I’ve been watching the weather over the last week hoping that it would dry out enough, that I can get into the first section of the new field to get some disking done. It’s always a challenge this time of year because you generally don’t get enough hours of sunlight to warm things up and dry the soil out. BUT!….. we’re getting close.

My unscientific method involves walking out to the field first thing in the morning, moving the top layer of frost or mud away, and grabbing some soil in my hand and squeezing it in my fingers. I’ve done this a couple of times in the past 10 years to the point that I;’m getting ok at determining whether a giant piece of steel (the tractor) has any right to be out in the field making a stir. If that seems doable, I’ll visit the field again in the afternoon and see what the soil seems like as it dries out over the day. The real trick here is checking it late enough in the afternoon, but leaving yourself enough time to still get the disking done before it gets dark and starts to freeze again.

SO that’s what I’ll be up to on Wed afternoon since they’re (the ominous they) calling for rain on Thursday. I’ll fill you in on how it goes.

Here’s the field I’ll hopefully be working in on Wednesday. This was taken standing on the newly created loading dock. Yeah, we’re pretty excited to have a loading dock. Our backs thank us.
