First Seeds of 2008
January 5th, 2008 Posted in FarmToday I tromped out into the rain/snow and made up the first mix of soilmix for 2008. A double batch to plant 30 flats (120 plants per flat) of salad mix that will go into our 30 by 100 foot unheated hoophouse. It’s always fun to think of seed these little tiny things in the soil and to think ahead of how the weather and season will have changed by the time we are ready to harvest. This first seeding is always a great opening act to bring me out of hibernation.
Our creek has been about 3 feet below flood stage for the past several days. I moved the refer truck and tractor away from their parking spots (by the streambank) up closer to the house, just in case.
The cool thing is our restoration project headed up by the Applegate River Watershed Council has been a great success in this last big storm event. The 25 foot trees with rootwads sticking out that we embeded in the streambank are effectively pushing the current out to the middle, away from the bank. It’s really cool to see the results in action.
