Farming like there’s a tomorrow

Internship

Both Melanie and Chris started their farming careers by interning on various organic farms around the country. Because of this, we have seen first hand the value that internships provide for aspiring farmers.

Our goal here is to provide a full immersion into the inner workings of a small scale for profit family farm. This full immersion involves all aspects of market farming including: greenhouse propagation, field preparation, planting, irrigation systems, weeding, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and our various facets of marketing – CSA, farmers’ markets, restaurants, and wholesale accounts.

Work begins May 1 and finishes November 1. Over this period of time the weather here in southern Oregon varies A LOT! Prospective interns must be prepared to deal with temperatures ranging from below freezing to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Although these are extremes they do happen and work must continue throughout.

We do work long hours through the summer months and much of the work is repetitive. Folks are asked to work 5 days per week. (Wed. and Sun. are days off). Having some prior experience with hands-on labor is helpful. (Not only for us but also for you).

All of this being said, we actually do have a fun time while working in the fields. You will be working side by side with the farmers and experience all the intricacies of in-field philosophy, music lore, word games, and other interesting ways to pass the time while picking the vegetable of the moment. (Usually bush beans…..) A season at Blue Fox Farm is best suited for people that want to run their own farms.

And finally the nitty gritty

Blue Fox Farm is looking for:
2 full season workers (May 1 – November 1)

  • Stipend of $500 per month
  • Housing is provided in a cabin or RV with a shared kitchen, dining, bathroom.
  • Food from farm is provided

An on farm visit is required for any full season applicants, and due to the fact that the closest major town is 15 miles away, reliable transportation is a must! And please, no dogs.
