Farming like there’s a tomorrow

Out in the covercrop

May 4th, 2008 Posted in Farm

Melanie, Demian, and I were out checking the covercrop today to see where it was at in growth. We’ll be mowing it down and tilling it in this week. You can see the height on the oats (the grassy looking blades) and the peas (look like pea plants- ha!) compared to our little guy. Notice his cool shirt with the tug boat- Chuggin’ along! …. That’s what we’ve been doing all along……

Great shot. The other day when we were discussing reasons to farm I should have mentioned kids. Nothing beats having a job you can take your kids to every day of the year! It trumps everything else.

I am curious what time in the fall you plant your cover crop and if you pasture it at all in the fall/winter/spring? Or is it all for green manure?

Generally the cover is planted in october or november after the veggies for the season are down, although now that we have more acreage to work with we plan to experiment with more diverse covers. For example, close an area down after a spring veggie crop and put it into a summer cover and then till that in and then maybe an overwintered fallow with nothing or growing a frost sensitive cover in the summer that frost kills to a mat for the over wintering. The possibilities are endless.
