What’s at Market? Week of October 26th

October 27th, 2008 Posted in What's @ Market ?

Hi there. We’re getting close to the end of the season. Ashland Saturday markets are finished. We’ll be attending the Grants Pass market for two more weeks (our last day there will be the 8th) and the Ashland market is finished on the 18th of November.

If any of you are interested in bulk amounts of storage foods (carrots, beets, potatoes, onions, winter squash, parsnips, etc.) please let me know soon so we can start to gather and portion our remaining stockpiles together.

Hope you’ve been enjoying these great fall days as much as we have. We operate somewhat on auto pilot in October. I wouldn’t say we’re burned out but we’re definitely ready for a breathing break. So having these picture perfect fall days makes autopilot that much easier.

We planted out our garlic for next season this past Thursday and our overwintered onions will be going out this week. The last of our planting for the season. Then it’s just a matter of continuing to plant our cover crops and pasture seeds, clean up around the farm, and start working on winter time projects.

We’ll be putting up more hoophouses this fall/winter that will continue our expansion of pushing the edges of our seasons. I love building new greenhouses.

So what we have at market this week:

  • Arugula
  • Beets
  • Braising Mix
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Carrots
  • Collards
  • Garlic (The last of what we have left)
  • Kale
  • Leeks
  • Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Parsnips
  • Potatoes
  • Radishes
  • Salad Mix
  • Spinach
  • Winter Squash (Good info on winter squash at this link)
  • Turnips

One last note is checking out this video link to Will Allen, a farmer that just received a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant for his amazing work in Urban Farming. Worth the viewing as well as checking his story out further at his organization’s website.

Will Allen is the man. Making Milwaukee better and better! Also check out http://www.walnutway.org Its another Milwaukee group fighting to keep out fast food and corner stores from the inner city and turn vacant lots into community gardens. It’s nutritional justice!
